HER NICHE WAS RADIO!
As a young girl, Kathie was always talking. But being loquacious would pay off years later. Kathie's favorite subject was always English, especially writing. Her English teacher, Miss Gaffney, wrote in Kathie's 1964 high school yearbook, "To Kathie, who talks incessantly, but has more than enough charm to be excused."
Having a father who did not always have the utmost patience with her, such a compliment was a breath of fresh air. Kathie had one sister, Patricia, (3 years older) and one brother, Anthony (10 years younger) who have both passed away. Kathie's brother was born with cerebral palsy due to loss of oxygen after a doctor's mistake. He was never able to walk or talk or feed himself, but having a disabled brother created compassion in Kathie and her sister, and her brother was a joy to everyone who cared for him.
Growing up, Kathie's father was an alcoholic who drowned out his severe back pain from six spinal surgeries during World War II until he found Jesus in the 1960's. He never touched a drop of alcohol after that. Because of his wife Mary's modeling of Christian character, he found Christ. Kathie's grandmother greatly influenced the family with her love and godly example, and Mary came to Christ first, then Kathie, then her father, and finally her sister, Pat.
CULT MINISTRY: In mid 1975 and 1976, Kathie conducted a weekly Bible study in her home with a few Christian ladies. One of the ladies (a friend and neighbor of Kathie's parents nearby) attended the study. One day, the woman came to Kathie's Bible study and mentioned that Jehovah's Witnesses had recently knocked at her door. In September of 1976, this dear woman was killed in a terrible car accident. The tragedy stuck Kathie very hard as the woman's name and her death were announced on live radio. Kathie was in shock.
Due to the death of this friend, joined CARIS (Christian Apologetics Research and Information Service) located in California and the HELP JESUS MINISTRY, a part of CARIS. which ministered to the cults. Kathie decided to go on radio and have a show about the cults. She was on WLIX, a Christian radio station, with a live weekly broadcast on Saturday mornings for fifteen minutes. The show was on the air for two years in 1979 and 1980. Kathie incorporated her own Christian ministry called Narrow Way Ministries with her grandmother, mother, and a close friend of hers. In 1984, Kathie's mother, Mary, passed away at a hospital (after three major surgeries in eighteen days) due to malpractice. This was a terrible tragedy in Kathie's life. But in 1985, Kathie went back on the radio. From 1985 to 1988, she produced her own Christian radio broadcast, STRAIGHT TALK WITH KATHIE ADLER, which lasted for four years.
Her radio program aired over WLIX RADIO, five nights a week for half an hour on the topic of cults and cult phenomena. Kathie taught on the topic of Jonestown, the Moonies, the Watchtower, the Mormons, and other cults. She interviewed former cult members who broke free as well as parents who lost their sons or daughters to a cult. She also taught basic Christian beliefs and how to witness to cult members. Kathie's program was very popular, ranking number five in popularity among more than thirty programs on WLIX. In all, Kathie produced 950 radio broadcasts over four years until it went off the air in October of 1988. To Kathie Adler, this was her most favorite time in life. She was good at radio and enjoyed sharing with her listening audience about what we believe and WHY.
After contracting Epstein Barr Virus (along with two other family members), and owing the radio station over $13,000 for air time, Kathie and her husband chose to have her go off the air. It took them as long as the show had been on the air to pay off the debt.
THE JONESTOWN MASSACRE: Kathie did radio shows on many topics including the tragic Jonestown Massacre which occurred on November 18, 1978. Many people today do not know about Jonestown. On that fateful day, 909 followers of the Rev. Jim Jones, leader of People's Temple which was formerly located in Ukiah, California, committed revolutionary suicide in the hot jungles of Guyana, South America. They drank a mixture of Flavor Aid laced with cyanide. A number of Jim Jones' followers were murdered by Jones' henchmen either by gunshot or forced injections of the poison. What precipitated this event was the visit by Congressman Leo J. Ryan who traveled to Jonestown along with 17 others, which included cameramen, news media, and worried family members. Ryan went there to investigate alleged abuses at the compound that got back to the states and had family members concerned.
The paranoid cult leader was stressed that some of his followers were disowning him to go back to the United States. As Leo J. Ryan was at a nearby airport getting ready to board a small plane, along with Jones' followers who wanted to go home, he was ambushed, shot, and killed along with five others. "The dead at the Port Kaituma airstrip were Congressman Leo Ryan, photographer Greg Robinson of The San Francisco Examiner; cameraman Bob Brown, and reporter Don Harris from NBC; and Temple defector Patricia Parks." https://jonestown.sdsu.edu/?page_id=35346
Kathie's Jonestown broadcasts used National Public Radio's cassette tapes on Jonestown, "Father Cares, the Last of Jonestown. But she was only permitted to use ninety seconds of the tapes. Sadly, the Jonestown Massacre broadcasts were Kathie's most popular radio broadcasts. This terrible tragedy affected Kathie Adler immensely and encouraged her to continue helping cult members to find God and escape the effects of a mind-control cult.

Kathie also taught about other cult groups such as the Moonies, the Way International, the Watchtower, the Mormons, and Satanism over WLIX Radio. She taught about basic Christian beliefs and how to recognize the common traits of a cult. Kathie was invited to speak at many churches on Long Island, and she usually sang at the end. In the 1980's, Kathie was invited as a guest speaker at the Witnesses Now for Jesus Convention at Blue Mountain Christian Retreat Center in New Ringgold, Pennsylvania, sharing her expertise with cults at their annual convention. Kathie was well-respected by her peers and cult research apologists such as Dr. Robert Morey, Professor James Bjornstad, and Bill and Joan Cetnar, all of whom are now with the Lord. Kathie Adler has written literature and fliers on many cults and has three short books for kids on the cults (created as allegories), and also wrote a one-hundred-twenty page book entitled The New Age Movement.
Saying that Kathie Adler was always talking as a kid is an understatement. But it means her ability to speak has been used by God in her ministry as it indicates speaking was useful for radio. And that is all God's doing. Kathie's husband and she have two children and one grandchild, and of course, her two cats are their kids!
And although there is no radio show at the present time, Kathie's tapes will be available to order as the Bible is timeless, and her show on the radio is still relevant today.
